2 coals plus windcover. Coconara coals burn too hot to really get HH smoking correctly. Al Awa'el Cocnuts are great for HH. Exoticas work well too, if they are your thing.

ya i would cut up the coal, HH and HF dont like a huge amounts of heat, i ended up using 2 coco coals instead of my normal 3 for other stuff.

i found larger holes end up keeping the tobacco cooler since the heat can escape more easily (ya it can come it more easily but heat rises so it seems to me to work out)

make sure you have a good gap between the foil and tobacco so it wont burn from direct contact

over all i really dont like HH just because i dont think it smokes well but you have it so smoke it.

IMO HH is better out of a phunnel for flavoring since it's so watery. Also go small on the holes as mentioned above, esp out of an egyptian head to keep it from burning. Do not use too many coals on HH- its cloulds won't be as big as sb and a little lighter than nakhla, but you should get solid flavor for a good hour plus. Other than that the trick is how the hookah master manages the heat. Good luck.

Same here, but i noticed if i go for big clouds the flavour aint they so i only use 2 and a windcover, which is probably the same as using 3

Well we smoked Nakhla double apple and the tiny holes worked great. Then we tried Al Fakher and well it burned constantly. I haven't tried HH since posting this so I don't know if it helps yet.

Al Fakher is now the ultimate heat bitch.

I actually smoke Nakhla with the hole pattern that John (Ch/HJ) likes to use, the 3 square shaped hole pattern, with the heat on the part of the foil with no holes- it works so well for nakhla, but I don't prefer it for other brands.

Oh well yeah I think with Nakhla you can use just about anything that gets hot and it will be a pleasant smoke. I believe you can poke the holes in your foil with your fingernails, light up a piece of cow pie, on an over packed cardboard bowl and it will still smoke like a dream. Just not really getting good smokes out of HH and not outstanding ones with AF.

Hey Fezzik, Ive had good luck with AF using the 3 ring pattern with a thumbtack. I start out with 3 CH Ql for first 10 min or so then back it down to 2 coals which I rotate about every 10-15 min and i was getting great flavor and pretty nice clouds with Af Mint last nite. Oh and i was using a funnel with 1 layer of foil.
hope it helps!

Vortex Bowl
Wind cover
1 layer of HD Foil
4 rings of holes all the way around the bowl
2 coco nara coals

I use this setup every time I smoke HH and HF. I haven’t had a problem ever since I started smoking it this way. I also like to rotate the charcoal about every 10 minutes. I smoked a bowl of Atomic Fireball the other night and it lasted around 1 1/2 hours and the flavour was pretty much there the whole time. I find that some flavours burn a little quicker than others so I will lift up the wind cover so let some of the heat out. I have become a huge fan of HH and HF ever since I got a setup down that works for me.
