Default Flat Rate Shipping?

How much do you guys usually pay for shipping? I am opening a online store here soon, and I am planning on doing flat rate shipping for everything, or maybe just on the shisha.

Do you think $9 or $10 is reasonable? I am doing free shipping on $75+ orders.

7.50. I usually don't buy from the stores with any shipping over 8. That's why i usually go with HookahCompany, TheHookahStore and TheHookah. HC usually has the cheapest shipping, never going over 8 for quite a bit of stuff. But they don't have Fumari so I order mostly from TheHookah.

9 or 10 is definitely reasonable, but I know for sure that you can ship out quite a bit of stuff for less than 8. The way I see it is why would I pay that much for shipping when i could use that towards a bunch of tobacco or cigars or gas . The money I save from not paying 10 flat rate I can buy a nice taboo cigar (they run 25-45% discounts at all times).

Ohh, also, it depends on what you have for sale, and the discount you offer. If oyu are gonna be one of those Sahara/HookahHookah clones then just give up now, there are way too many of those.

I usually will not use a vendor with flat rate shipping. My orders are usually under $40 and flat rate shipping is rape when you buy so little. I know the argument about "well if you bought a hookah I'd lose money shipping it" that's fine but I'm not buying a hookah. I wait to buy stuff until a vendor has free shipping or damn near free shipping. If I'm buying $40 worth of stuff there is no way it will cost near 10 bucks or 25% of the order total to ship it.

I think I might just base shipping on quantity/weight.

Say you order just 1 250g tub, I can ship it to you for $5 in 2 business days.

If you order 5 250g tubs of shisha, it should only cost like $12-$15 for priority, even less if you don't need it that quick.

haha yeahh thats the only thing about flat shipping thats sweet .. you make a huge order with lots of coals tobacco and a hookah thats gunna be a butt load on shipping if its not a flat rate.. i would say varry it.make it like 7 bucks flat rate anything over 50 is 10 bucks shipping free shipping over 120.. thats pretty reasonable in my eyes

I don't get how these guys can afford to ship for so cheap, unless they have business accounts with USPS or UPS or whatever.

HS does variable shipping and ive paid up to like 30 bucks for shipping and im just in VA. john does flat rate and when i have ordered from him ive gotten like 4 boxes of his coals so 10.95 (or what ever the change is on it) is really good for all that weight (plus all the shisha i get so its like a 10-15 lbs package IIRC

I think variable shipping would work better, but I will just have to work the numbers and see.

that makes sense for the consumer.
If I may put it in perspective from a vendor. you can't ship a pound of anything using fedex or ups for under $6, so let's say you order 3 boxes of whatever you smoke, since i quoted dunk i'll use nakhla, about $7, that's about $2 x 3 profit (never mind packaging products, credit card fees and the the time it takes to process and package) If I was to ship that and cover shipping I would be negative. I love you guys and all but I can't do that.
I know you brought up flat rate shipping being good if you order a hookah, in that case my costs is about $20 so I eat $9. If you get a $100 hookah the profit is $40 minus $9 for shipping loses, $3 packaging, you get the point.
I'm not complaining and the consumer usually doesn't care about anything but the bottom line. Us hookah vendors aren't huge like costco.com or other who offer free shipping on everything. But I thought I would contribute, especially since there are those of you who have been asking about advice on opening an online retail store or hookah lounge. We have seen vendors come an go that offer super cheap prices on everything when they first introduce themselves but some of the more established companies stick to their guns on prices and that's how they survive.
Shipping is definitely a challenge, and if you think you're going to go to the post office everyday to ship out 20 orders good luck. I go to the post office for international orders only and every time I am waiting in line I say I will never do it again. That's the vendors POV, but for those of you consumers that don't care I understand I am a consumer of many products as well.

USPS is a pain in the butt sometimes. I have had better luck with them but that is just me. As for standing in line. You can get an account with them and print off labels and they will come pick it up free. So it is only as convenient as you want it to be. I have or had accounts with the post office and FedEx I haven't used them in a while. It is just too easy for people to get away with mail fraud buying computers from people over mail. I just stopped trying.

I think John got a point about going to the post office and waiting in queues, im a active ebay seller ,that sells at least 200 products in a week, and my customer service is right up they with Johns(not boasting or anything) but i have my items packed within 20 mins of a order being placed if im home and if im not then it is packed straight away when i get back.

I used to have to go to the post office every day to get 10 or so products posted and its a hassle as you have to wait 20-30 mins before being served and then another 30-40 mins getting the stamps paper work etc done on the packages.

So i just get them printed online now whoch works out cheaper, and have someone pick them up,

So when you do work out you p+p charges bear in mind how long it takes to pack, the packaging cost, and do it online as most of it works out cheaper and is hassle free.

I CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL FLAT RATE

I don't need to wait in line at USPS, I run a ebay store and I already sell 5-10 items a day, I weight it out at home, print the label off of the USPS website, and just drop it off at the counter at the USPS, I am in and out in 2 minutes.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I think variable shipping will work better, I am not going to overcharge, you pay what I pay for shipping.

USPS tends to be expensive... I would be like HC and go Fedex.

i have had issues with all of them. my friend got a $400 paintball marker lost that was used by one of the biggest pro teams in the world along with being a huge piece of local history in the sport with no compensation even though he had insurance on it with USPS. UPS has lost my package, said it was delivered and then it turned up the next day, and the fed ex drivers have had a bad time finding my apartment (given it is in a really weird location) but they would not leave the package at the mailboxes like is normal (it is past a key code/key fob required access in the apartment building so it is safe), and dhl was a joke before they went under. and USPS has put packages in the wrong package mailboxes here, put the key in another persons mail box and gave me a key to an empty box.

the thing i like about fed ex though is that the drivers will call you if they have issues delivering usually and recently a driver doubled back to get it to me.

for small items that fit in a mail box i am fine with USPS, and one of the places i have to order metal (precocious metals) for my classes uses priority and it gets here the next day with no issues. fed ex or UPS are fine for larger items but fed ex seems to be a little cheaper IIRC for ground.

all of them have issues, and the majority of the issues are on the destination end once it gets to drivers from what i have seen
