Well, I don't know about other people but I know for myself, it really depends on what coals you are usin. How much you pack your bowl (Which you should really not pack it down at all) But for me, I have Coco Naura Coals, and I use just one on a medium size bowl. However, for larger bowls and more shisha use two coals.

What your more than likely doing is heating up the bowl hot, which gives you good smoke at first, but then you are burning through the shisha. Its all about heat management. Also different kinds of shisha give off more smoke than others. This information is just off my own experiences.

two coconaras with a windcover generally burns for me, idk why... maybe we rip too often. Without the cover they tend to burn still but not as quickly, gotta really watch out , those coals burn shisha very easily. At least in my experience.

My setup is

Nour Hookah
2x coco coals
Egyptian bowl or sometimes phunnel
Nakhla, starbuzz, tangiers, and golden laylina is the brands of shisha I use

I get clouds all day with full flavor

but then again back when I had a crappy chinese hookah I wouldn't be able to do that compared to the Nour or even a KM

with my mod bowl packed flufy with a gap below the foil
2 layers normal foil (or 1 of HD but i can only find heavy strength now which is not hte same)
3 CH nat coals

only tangiers do i really smoke out of my small phunnel but i use 2-3 on that, usually start with 3 and drop one if it gets harsh and then the next round go with 2 unless i dont pay attention and light 3 again.

there is a good balance on most flavors between flavor and smoke and one point, going much past it for smoke is kinda pointless and doesnt get much thicker with out getting harsh. also moving the coals is a big thing to do, if you dont you will get heat up parts to much.

honestly a lot of smoke is nice but if your losing flavor to get them, its pointless IMHO

i have a friend that things big clouds are part of the experience, same with the buzz. i hope he doesnt smoke to much then cause hes going to lose the buzz pretty fast. i only get a touch of a buzz on tangiers when im getting started.

of course i would love to keep the smoke nice and thick right at that nice sweet spot but it doesnt happen so i will take that as the high point of the session where i have great flavor and great smoke and let the other parts be good with good flavor and ok smoke

The more coals the thicker the clouds, but if you use 1-2 coals you get in between but if you use a single your smoke is more flavoursome

if you aren't sure, just add coals slowly and remove one immediately if it gets harsh - the goal is the most heat without burning, so just be as careful as possible

It depends on the tobacco. You have to mess around with the actual amount because it does vary. I usually start out with 2 exotica 1" pieces on a reg mya bowl... where I start with 3 1" pieces for my small tangiers... then i adjust durning the session. I can get nice clouds while retaining flavor... there is no reason to burn the hell out of something to get gigantic clouds... play with the heat to achieve great flavor while getting a nice cloud.
