Nakhla needs lots of heat to get it started then you need to back off a bit. I let the coals sit on the bowl for 5 minutes with a windcover then remove cover and 1 piece of my coal. I use exoticas broken into 1/4ers and use 3/4 of teh stick to start then take 1 qtr off until I start to lose smoke at the end.

Ahhhhh yup, its very heat sensitive, when you realize its getting too hot or harsh just take one off and blow out the bad smoke, wait a minute and start up again.

Nakhla is good! But yes it is tricky but when you master it, you will be rewarded with some yummy goodness!

Husky gave some great advice, the windscreen, the removal of coal, etc. all great tips!

So to recap, if you are using Japanese coals, put on three pieces, a windcover (can be aluminum foil cover like mine, lol) and after 5 minutes, remove cover and one of the coal pieces so you only have two coals, after the smoke gets less and less, throw the third back on there to finish out the bowl ...

Sweet!!! I knew it would work out for you. Pretty much you need to do that with all Nakhla, its dry and heat sensitive. As a rule of thumb I do that to all my shisha and it seems to work wonders for me, starbuzz is the only exception though. I can put on 3 coals and leave em until the bowl is finished hehe go figure. Keep experimenting with different brands to see what works for them, I used to keep notes on all the brands and flavors when I first started or tried a new brand.

I think part of the reason Nahla is so hard to smoke is the fact it's so dry. Wetter (IE: drippy) shishas have the moisture to combat the heat and smolder cook. Nakhla is more oliy and drier, even if it was when I've opened it (wetter I mean), it loses the extra moisture pretty fast (even air-tight sealed).

I'm looking around the area to see if I can find some High End honeys or food grade glerycin - I wanna try adding that to some Nakhla and see if it helps smooth/even out the smoke.

"That stuff" is also a major component of the human body, as well as a common food additive.

Nahkla is probably my favorite brand. When I imagine what shisha was like hundreds of years ago,I think it was probably similar to al nahkla.

Nahkla is typically dry due to poor packing methods. If you ever get a chance to buy it in Egypt you'll notice it is a good deal wetter then it is here although it is still drier then many other brands. When I get it I always add a quarter teaspoon of glycerine per bowl and mix it well and then let is sit a hour or so prior smoking. Nahkla is a pretty old marque in my opinion and certainly worth the money.

I think nahkla is drier than most brands by design. It's actually packaged better than most.Wrapped in plastic and then sealed in bags and boxed.
