I've been smoking tombac for a lot of years now and I know a little about it. First of all it should be noted that unless it's made in Isfahan (a province in Iran) it's not going to taste like actual Isfahani tombac. Most of what you can buy in the West is actually made in Jordan or India but those products are still very enjoyable.

Anyways, the way that is stuff is typically prepared is not how it's been shown in the videos that are floating around.

They basic procedure is as follows:

1) cut off a section of the brick fits the diameter and height of your bowl.
2) Soak in water until the leaf is supple.
3) Vigorously squeeze the the leaf until no water drips from it.
4) Pull out the stems as they have way more nicotine then the rest of leaf and inhibit even burning and taste harsh.
5) Pile up the lose leaf in the bowl using the mid sized leaf on the bottom, the smaller fragments in the center and the largest pieces at the top. Doing so lowers ash production and prevents bits of tombac falling down your stem. Make sure the leaf is loosely piled and not packed down.
6) Heat enough coals to cover all or nearly all of the surface area of the tombac.
7) Once the tombac is smoking rotate the coals to get an even burn pattern and brush away the ash as it develops.

Note: Tombac has great flavours but if you are used to smoking crap like SB/Fantasia it will knock you flat if you inhale as normal. Smoke slowly and inhale shallowly or not at all. Drink lots of fluids and eat fruit when you smoke tombac and wait at least 30 seconds between drags.

In terms of actual design the base and mainstem of any well designed and built narghile should work fine with tombac. What differs is the sort of bowl and hose used. Getting the proper bowl and hose in the U.S. is basically impossible so if you want to smoke this sort of thing you need to improvise. What I recomend is that you use a funnel, vortex or a conventional bowl that is wide in diameter with very small holes. In terms of hoses you want something that is free flowing so go with something that a wide diameter.

What I did, i should make clear, cause I dont know if it was, was not smoke tombac as tombac is meant to be smoked.

I do not have the proper hookah for it, nor do most people on the forums. it is great, spicy, and yes, it will kick your ass.

Some flexibility with how tombac is smoked. I have a thread floating around about blending different kinds of tombac and in some places it's mixed with Balkan style pipe tobacco. I know a lot people like to but nectar or Roafza in the base. I have something about that floating around the forum I think.

there are certain bowls and pipes made for this.

the bowl is really important, regular bowls are tooooooooo small, even large ones.

From what i've seen (admittedly a limited sample) the narghile itself doesn't differ all that much no matter what you smoke. What differs is the hose and bowl design. Still, i've gotten great results using my namoor and my tombac bowl and i've had decent sessions with a funnel so in the end you don't need an authetic setup to enjoy tombac.

If you want of these types of bowls you can either buy the Iranian narghile they have on the hookah company site or you can get lucky like I did. Other wise you'll have to go to a country where tombac is commonly smoked to find one.

I'd like to get one, too. Are there really no websites out there that sell them? I've also considered possibly having a friend make one, a neighbor of mine makes a lot of pottery and sculptures, it probably wouldn't be too hard to make a wide, flat bowl of that size.

I'll give it a shot. He probably hasn't made anything in quite some time, but I'm pretty sure he could figure it out without a problem. To me it seems like hollowing out the bowl would be the only obstacle.

Well guys, I am happy to say that a good friend of mine brought me some TOMBAK from the Middle East, actually from the Gaza Strip, in Palestine. Haven't seen it yet, but from what Hajo Flettner says I expect it to be Jordanian. I will follow his advice, and let You know the results of my first attemps to smoke it.

Tombac is great stuff.

One can also smoke it without a bowl... I use this method frequently.

What you do is pull off a good size chunk of the brick, soak it, squeeze it, and pull the stems out as detailed above. Instead of throwing it in a bowl, wrap the leaves around the top of your pipe (No bowl attached) like a giant cigar. Use an Ice pick or kebab skewer to run some holes down the middle, than throw some coal on top and you're ready to go.

That sounds a little rough on the lungs. Are you still 'creating a heat screen' at that point? Does the coal still bake the tobacco? or is it just straight up combustin'?
