Default Q: Where did this brass is better heat-wise thing come from?

I admit I haven't really done my research, but lately people have been promoting brass hookahs because they handle heat better? By this I assume they mean it doesnt conduct as much...because you don't want your hookah to get hot.

I guess I don't really have conductivity figures. But brass is made out of mostly copper which is an incredibly good conductor, and i think the remainder is zinc? Steel is not that great of a conductor.

Now i know alloying metals decreases their conductivity, but still, i don't see how brass can be so much worse at conducting that steel?

Unless the argument is not based on the material at all, but just the density of molecules? Heat transfer is slower when there are more molecules to "heat" up?

Anyone?

My question, which is somewhat related, is why people are saying that brass and copper are toxic? I mean, most of the water you drink is coming through brass or copper piping at some point, right?

that has to do with copper oxides in the form of gas....if copper is heated it can release poisonous gases, not sure exactly what is required for this to take place but yeah.

It's just photolinger's propaganda. His fanboy opinions are spreading like mushrooms.

what im curious is, why does it matter?

i like brass better but i have no idea why it would matter that brass can handle heat better...im not exactly holding a blow torch to it. plus i only use funnel bowls, the only part that gets hot is the bowl, my stems never melt while smoking...

a better question to ask is, did you know that when brass tarnishes over in your downstem it can affect the flavor (negatively)...while stainless steel does not do that...

I have never heard that argument. I just like the look and feel much better.

Dakins, you are new here. Photolinger is not the biggest cheerleader for Syrian hookahs by far. We each have our preferences and only when people get defensive and biting toward others with different opinions that there are problems.

Love what you love. I prefer brass.

Well there are many different types of brass Yellow Brass, Red Brass, Copper Brass, Copper Red Brass. All of which contain different amounts of Copper, Zinc and Tin. And, who knows what syrians are really made out of, it could be some cheap alloy that is used to help reduce costs, or some old brass recipe that is used primarily for brass hookahs. Also, about the heat with copper stuff releasing gasses...Some syrians have a different material used for the top portion of the stem where it screws on top of the tray, Mine does at least, and it could be for that reason. It still feels like brass, but possibly a different material, or from a different batch of metal.

Myas get hot as shit, you can't even touch the top half of the stem. Any other hookah will be cooler to the touch.

All metal conducts heat.
