Default Exotica coals breaking apart

Sorry for the newb question as I have been smoking my own hookah for only 2 weeks now.

I use Exotica coals to smoke my shisha but they seem to always break apart easily after they are lit. I always wait until they are ashed over before putting them onto my bowl. When handling them with my tongs to place them onto the bowl the coals end up splitting apart. Is this normal? Do I have an old box of coals?

They're lit with the $10 Walgreens coil stove until red hot and the coals are broken into 4 pieces.

apparently the new boxes with the QC sticker on the inside are fixed. I had this problem everytime I used exoticas and never went back to them.

I use those coals as well. I break the coals before I put them on the stove. Another thing you can try is when they either lite on fire or when half is glowing red flip them so the entire coal turns red. Then once most or all is red you can put them on the bowl. But i suggest breaking them into 4 pecies and then putting them on the stove.

I suggest using golden charcoal, but those are expensive that is pretty much the only coal that I use. The cool thing about those are, you can lite them by putting a non burnt coal onto a burnt one. It will just lite itself.

I guess I have the fubarred batch because my box does not have the QC sticker anywhere on it. What a pain especially when I move the coals around in mid session.

You most likely got a very old batch of Exoticas.

I got done with a very old batch a month ago and that batch was horrible! No imparted taste but every 1/3 I use pretty much broke on me.

I recommend getting the new batches with the inspection sticker (small white circle that is inside one of the box's flaps). They are the best ones I have tried so far and they hardly break.

Ah, so I'm not the only one. I heard so many good reviews about the exoticas so I thought I had to get some. I fired some up and as soon as I put one on top of my bowl it cracked. There was so much ash. Coco Naras forever!

well, i've only had this problem when i dropped the coals onto the ashtray from 6" up.
i didn't have the sticker either.
it only happened 3-4 times.

even when they're broken, they still work fine. it evens out the heat.

I've never had that problem. Exoticas are great coals. Perhaps you are overheating them on the stove?? I've noticed if I ignore them on the coil and let them heat up for too long they form small cracks that split the coal when moving them. How long are you keeping them on the coil?

i put them on the stove till i see that most of the coal is red. if there are some parts that still are black its ok because i take them out put them in the hookah tray and blow on them for 10-15 sec till the heat moves and turns the whole coal red. what kind of stove do you have a flat top or actual flame?

I also have to come out in defense of Exotica's. Even though I've also had the odd occasion where a coal might break into a few pieces, these occurances are few and far between so as far as I'm concerned these coals are right up there with the best.

It could possibly be with the older batches where these breaking symptoms occur more frequently

I haven't tried the new exoticas yet, but the old ones were horrible. They were stinky when lighting, tasted funky while smoking, and EVERY SINGLE FINGER cracked and broke on me.

I was very disappointed after hearing such good things. If I ever come across a new box maybe i'll give them a shot. What vendors are only selling new ones now? I am afraid to order and get another shitty batch.

Well, I did just order them last week so I'm guessing they're new ones, but I didn't look for the sticker. I guess I should give them a second chance, because it was the first coal of the box that I used, but considering it's the first coal, it doesn't give me much hope for the rest of 'em.
