Default Project: Cold Smoke

So I got to thinking about the design flaw with the under-tray chiller hookah designs and thought I might be able to make something more effective up. Basically it adapts to the hose port and creates a second air chamber thats also filled with ice, then there's a second hose port that you connect the hose to. Still a work in progress but one things for sure, this smoke is cold. Anyone every try this before?

extremely badass, hope it works.

I wonder, if you sectioned off that second chamber, you could use something like dry ice or liquid nitrogen. Put that in the bottom section, the smoke would pass through the top without touching the nasty stuff but getting nice and cold nonetheless.

It would be too pricey, i think, bur could get you the coldest smoke ever! just a thought....

Dry ice costs like $1.50 USD a pound o_o
Don't know about liquid nitrogen, but I do know that it would freeze your air chamber there on contact.

Don't use dry ice.

Looks awesome. How does it hit in comparison to the pipe without the added chamber?

I have seen a variation of this idea before. The one I saw used a second chamber that had ice and water in it.

start breathing in dry ice fumes and youll have much worse than a "hookah headache"

"Dry ice is solidified carbon dioxide. When dry ice melts, it turns into carbon dioxide gas. Carbon dioxide gas is always present in the environment, but in low concentrations. It is colorless and odorless."

"Dry ice can be a very serious hazard in a small space that isn't well-ventilated. As dry ice melts, it turns into carbon dioxide gas. In a small space, this gas can build up. If enough carbon dioxide gas is present, a person can become unconscious, and in some cases, die."

Stay away from the nasty stuff like dry ice and liquid nitrogen not healthy for the lungs when it gets really cold feel your lungs burn when you breathe you don't want that when you smoke Crushed ice with water and salt should cool it enough

Very cool. I'm actually a little surprised that there aren't any double chamber vases out there already.

Ive seen this a few times before but this is by far best the most functionally looking one and actually seems like it would work, i say patent it and improve it, and then sell it on

Not only would dry ice probably lead to your death, it would probably freeze burn all the way down.

Good idea if it was ice..and if you used ice water (non salted), it would basically be another hookah base connected to it. I dont know who did that, maybe 9mm since he is crazy, but someone basically did that before

yea i've applied for a patent something I never thought I'd do...

so far the biggest problem is the sheer amount of air that needs to be displaced, the connecting hose and vase might have to become smaller so you don't hyperventilate trying to get that first hit

oh and the hit, so far so good, the coolness of the smoke actually changes the flavor slightly... so far I've only tried it with mint and melon both flavors tasted just fine but almost... heavier, if that's a way to describe a taste...

Just to make sure I'm seeing it right - there is no water (other than melted ice) in the second chamber, right? That seems like too much work to me, but since you've come that far, I've got a suggestion to get you even more cooling. Take some tubing from your hose port to the smoke chamber, but coil it up in ice water. That way the draw has to go through the tubing and spends more time chilling.

I've been meaning to mess with rock salt and ice in the base. The salt depresses the freezing point of water, which means your water can get much colder. One of these days I just need to remember to pick up a bag of salt

Can't believe this hasn't been asked yet...

Could you take a hit with the chamber and another without and compare smoke density?

nick - I did, visual density was not increased a whole lot, but the smoke felt cooler and thicker going in and out, produced a very substantial cloud.

code - that was one of the design suggestions but I went with the open chamber because it allows direct contact with the ice, also a plastic tube would be a very poor cooling conductor, copper piping or something would work better. Also the smoke in the chamber condenses between hits because it sits in the chamber, when you take a hit you only end up clearing about half the chamber just because of the amount of air in there but you also pull the next hit into the ice...
