Default now explain this, hookahpros. . .

So I was cleaning my stem the other day on my 30" AF rig, and I think I got it pretty much cleaned... so I grab a squeegie of sorts ( just a stick with a paper towel on the end) to get all the water out, and the paper towel comes out green. Heres the kicker, I have NEVER used this hookah (to that point) with anything that was died green OR without a vortex bowl.. this has my mind boggled atm.

If I remember correctly copper "rusts" green I wonder if a part is copper? Just a far far stretch.

im pretty sure it is only brass, and it is not the terquoise type of thing you see on copper, its like grass stains on the paper towel, if you will . . . pretty gross.

Sometimes with metal lathes and presses they use like a chemical agent to help the process, like sort of a lubricant. Im not an expert on metal working, never really done much of it. But it could just be left-overs of the process

could just be oxidation from the brass, when you pushed the towel thru it scraped some off the inside of the stem. it would be green.
nothing to really worry about.

its brass tarnish. it will always happen. if it gets really bad, it starts to flavor your hookah. you can use a metal wooly pushed through the stem back and forth. helps sometimes.

Just clean it really good again. My KM is brass cored and I go through this all the time. Just get a mixture of lemon juice/water/a small amount of dishwashing soap and run it through the stem and just clean it out really good with those pipe scrubbers

yep lemon juice should do the trick, the acidity will remove the tarnish for awhile, till it builds up again, its just oxidation of the brass, its natural for it to occur.

Ok, I just hate the ghosting of flavors IN my hookah, I always thought it was my hose.. but It is not I guess, since i clean the hell out of that. Another quick question, How do you guys plug the hole so you can work on it with the liquids in it? just paper towels or something?

to answer the first portion... It happens all of the time on my brass musical instruments... when i wipe down the valves/slides before cleaning them it's a greenish color that it sounds like you're describing... Probably just the moisture reacting with the brass... nothing to worry about IMO...

the last bit: when i plug one end to clean the stem, i use my left hand middle finger to plug it, and use my other fingers/palm to steady the stem, and i use my right hand to pour the water in and use a cleaning brush.
Feels wicked uncomfortable... but you gotta do what ya gotta do, i guess.

What did your hookah do to deserve such poor treatment?

I was young and it was my first hookah, didn't know how to clean it, and the common camber didn't help out with the cleaning. this stuff comes out of my AF rig every time I smoke it. Usually though, I only see it after brushing the inside. I think its just a coating on the metal, no harm no foul. it doesnt come off without water/scrubbing, so im sure it doesn't get into the smoke

its common with brass, i have green come out of my mya after every smoke when a rinse it out, its just the smoke that sticks to the sides building up a layer of light corrosion but since it mixes with the smoke that sticks it gets the green color very fast. iron/iron alloys (steels) are the only metals that rust, the other ones have corrosion which usually develops a patina and stops corroding where as rust will "grow" into the metal.

my friends rig didnt get cleaned often, he would brush it every week or 2 but noting more since he was on active duty and was out doing patrols/SARs/etc all the time. one time when i was home and went over to visit i offered to clean his rig and used lemon juice on it and it came out a nasty green (i filled up the stem and let it soak for 30-60 seconds). vinegar pull the gunk off better but doesnt freshen as perfectly but you wont notice the difference when smoking and its a boat load cheaper. after you clean it once as long as you clean it often it will be fine. i clean mine before every session (i smoke 2 bowls a night usually) and when im lazy i just rinse and then fill the stem with vinegar and rinse again, maybe a little brush. if im not lazy i add a scrubbing with dish soap before the vinegar. takes about 5 mins
