Question Why is it burning?

I can't figure out why this shisha tobacco is burning. I've been doing packing it to the best of my abilities.

Loose + space between foil and tobacco.

Here's pictures. Sorry for the quality, I only have a camera phone here.
I'm using Fusion - Cactus Pear.

Oh, and the smoke I'm getting is terribly soft. Flavor is soft too.

Ya a thin metal rod...

I guess that's my problem. I used to always use toothpicks and lately I've been using that out of convenience. I'll try out thumbtacks tomorrow. (I don't have any toothpicks)

Cut the coal in half or snap it in half and put them on opposite sides on the rim of the bowl

just noticed
looks like your foil is sagging
and it probably sags more when you take a hit
thats probably it
make sure your foil is tight

The picture is deceiving. It's not really sagging. I'll try splitting and putting on opposite sides next time.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

dudes the bovious answer is its a ceramic bowl right? If answer is yes then throw it against the ground as hard as you can and laugh while it lies there in pices..athen you go buy a clay bowl..
and no its not to much coals on there.. with a ceramic bowql I would even get another coal, break them apart so I have 3 halves of a coal and put them in a triangle.. This is my opinion so no rage against me not liking ceramic bowl ( if this that bowl but i think it looks like it ?? )

i think the bowl is fine, people bash the thin bowls but i use a mod bowl and its fine.

i would double up on standard foil or get the heavy strength stuff (i like 2 of regular as i feel it gives a little better buffer and you usually can get a lot more bowls out of a roll of normal foil even with doubling it up. the way its burning it looks like adjusting foil will be much better

splitting the coal is also a good option

the bowl does look a little shallow for my tastes though but if it works for you thats all that matters

everytime I have used ceramic its been ending up like your photos..
There is a way to smoke form these bowls as some memebrs obviously do so try out what matt said once or twice but if it doesnt work jsut save yourself alot of trouble and frustation and go get a standard egyptian bowl .... they can manage the heat much better !
depending on what you smoke.. seems like youve but starbuzz in the pictures so Id actually get a small tangiers phunnel instead ( and a scalli mod but its not necessary but will make it a bit easier to pack and will save you alot of shisha as well )..

That Havanna bowl (aka Mod bowl) is shallow .. and sucks because of that ..

Still usable though .. spread it out .. put less holes and smaller! safety pin / thumb tack small .. break your coal in half and put half on each side.

Can also try doubling up the foil and using a windcover. Use three halves of your quicklight coal if you do this.

^^ that bowl is a low more shallow than my mod bowl

and i have to do this again because the terms are being tossed around too much <rant> we do not have clay bowls, a plain clay bowl will not survive being used more than 2-3 times max, what most people refer to as "clay" is unglazed ceramic (once fired clay is ceramic). the mod bowls use a smoother clay that is used thinner compared to the egyptian clay that is used in the "traditional" bowls </rant>

maybe its hard to use QLs on a mod bowl, i used coco style nats (been using CH ones) and have no isses with 3, i do have to move my coals a decent amount but it also is from the way i use aggressive heat management (toss 3 coals on with a wind cover and get it going in a few mins, pull the wind cover and move the coals w/o flipping, the first 15 mins i move the coals probably 2-3 times but after that i dont move them much)

Matt you explain this everytime and I guess I never learn it for some reason..
In my head this plastictype glazed bowls that imo sucks, are those I clal ceramic. And the brown thing that looks like clay and that is standard for egyptianhookahs and that works good ( imo ) I call clay..
and thats how I will refeer to it even if its really not correct terms I think that on the level we talk here it works ok to say this..
but in university they would probably laugh at me if I say this..

and technically, the shisha is the actual smoking device itself.

How can you guys tell what material the bowl is made of?
That grime is from not cleaning the bowl from the day before.

Before getting this Fusion, I would consistently smoke Nakhla Double Apple and I used toothpicks.

I didn't burn it like with the fusion but I still never got thick smoke and flavor was always very very faint.

So it's the bowl? I'm getting a vortex in a couple of days anyway.

people can tell what the bowl is made from by just knowing that it looks like. you can tell the difference between glazed and and unglazed very easily

you know, i think i know the real issue here, is that bowl sealing correctly? most of the "mod" bowls need a thicker grommet to get a good seal on it, if your not getting thick smoke but your able to burn the tobacco you probably have a leak some where in the hookah, more than likely the bowl/stem seal

Checked for all leaks..

Checked everything individually but also did the ultimate test: (hand on top of bowl = no air)

Edit: you might be right actually.
I tried putting foil on the bowl without poking holes. And I was definitely able to get air.
There was obviously pull but it wasn't that much pull... So it's definitely not airtight.

glazed or unglazed is very easy to differentiate. But I think most people here have glazed bowls whether clay or ceramic.
I meant how can you tell if it's clay? The fact that it's white is a giveaway. But if I had a brown ceramic bowl, would you know hat it's ceramic and not clay?
