Default Cigarette vs. Hookah Smoke quick "napkin" study

This will be my first post on here so I hope you enjoy I apologize if the pictures are too large.

I saw a video one time comparing the smoke exhaled from a regular cigarette and the vapor exhaled from a vaporizer by breathing the smoke into a napkin, and I thought it would be a fun experiment to do to compare cigarette smoke to hookah smoke.

Materials: My new Egyptian Nile Hookah from hookah-shisha.com (works great btw) with Fantasia fuzzy peach navel, used 2 quicklight three kings coals. The cigarette used was a Gudang Garam Signature (clove cig imported from Indonesia). I used large dinner napkins with a smooth surface area where I breathed the smoke.

Method: For both, I took pics at 0, 5, 10, and 20 drags from both the cigarette and the hookah. The hookah had heated up for about 10 minutes and the cigarette for one.

Before the results, I'd like to add that the hits from the hookah were MUCH larger than the drags from the cigarette, so the hookah napkin had more smoke exhaled into it.

1st pictures: Before

Hookah

after 5 hits

After 10 hits

After 20 hits

In actuality, the napkin showed no noticeable discoloration of any kind, if any. This was a very surprising result, as I expected at least some kind of color.

Cigarette

After 5 drags (pic taken outside):

After 10 drags (pic taken outside):

After 20 drags:

As you can see, there is a ton of difference between the two. The last pic is a side by side comparison.

Thought I'd share that with everyone here at HookahPro, hope you feel better about your smoking habits now lol

well, tar is created when you burn an organic substance. if you smoke your hookah properly, then no tar is created.

Yes, the more experiments people do, the more it will be accepted into society, and the more information we have against anti-hookah people. Great job. Im thinking of doing an experiment similar to this to show my family.

I'd do this study too... Except I've never smoked a cigarette . Proud to say it haha.

Would be good to see mythbusters do an episode on smoking myths, and including hookah vs cigarettes.

Hookah needs popular media to change views. At present Hookah has a bad image because of it. I saw a programme on bbc about legal highs, when he was going to shops to buy some in camden (london) there was countless clips of shops selling hookahs, but the narrator gave no information about them. So any ignorant person watching it will relate it too what the programme was about, and not about hookahs strong traditions and other great aspects that are not a danger to society.

So overall tests like this are a great way to educate people about hookah. But i wish the media hookah gets would be more like this. Well in a perfect world it would.

Well, even if it was done a million times before its a strong yet simple weapon against those who constantly bash hookahs.

Unfortunately, this is false. The 'burning' of the tobacco the studies refer to is simply the combustion process, or the normal process of generating smoke in a hookah. It is not the hookah aficionado's definition of 'burning' the shisha, which is overheating the tobacco to the point of charring it. Even herbal shisha produces tar when it is combusted. I wish it wasn't the case, but it is. The 0% tar on shisha packages refers to the amount of tar BEFORE smoking, not the total that is produced during the session.

Yes, but i still think it is substantially less than a cigarette.

Of course, this only shows what is NOT being absorbed in your lungs, and while interesting I would also be interested to perhaps see a test where the napkin is positioned between the smoker's mouth and the moutpiece . . so you are drawing through the napkin to catch what is actually entering your lungs.

Not sure if anyone would actually be willing to do this though, haha, or how plausible it is.

Though I did hear a year or so ago that second hand smoke from hookah can actually be more detrimental than firsthand? This statement did not entirely compute within my brain, however.

Good work, thanks for posting.
