Default Interesting Traditional Bowl

So i was in astoria today looking at hookah products, and noticed that many of the shops sold bowls that were not your traditional bowl. They were more like a funnel (no, not a phunnel), and basically just resembled an old style record player horn, with a single hole for smoke to travel down through. Then they had these with a variation- the top edge of the bowl was almost ruffled. Unfortunately, i can't think of a better way to describe it. Anyway, has anyone ever seen/used any of these? I thought they might be used for a more traditonal tobacco, but i haven't found anything on that. Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures and wont be going back for a few weeks.

they had one of these at the hookah lounge i used to go to. apparently you put a chunk of coal in there so it somewhat covers the hole, then put tobacco on top. not sure how much truth that holds though.

Wouldnt the shisha or tombac fall through the hole? Or do you use like a mesh screen some something of that nature?

I have no idea. I feel like the next time i stop in i should definitely ask. Because i really don't see any simple way to smoke out of it that would be successful.

I know exactly what your talking about, ive been there and seen them in person, i've seen some of the cafes around there using that with nak zag with the coal directly on the tobacco.

Most likely Tombak bowls, you don't use foil/screen on them so probably why they look confusing. If I'm not mistaken I believe you take the dry Tombak wet it then lay it out over the bowl which you then place a coal directly on top.

Yea, i dont think i will try tombac. It sounds cool, but if for some reason i got sick with it, i wouldnt want to associate that sickness with hookah.

i doubt you would get sick from hookah if you smoked tombak and got sick, if youve tried black moassel just think how big of a difference that is to modern flavored stuff, tombak is going to be totally different as well

True. I do enjoy Nakhla Zaghoul, but with the foil on of course.

Actually, ive been thinking. I think i already have a tombac bowl, kinda. Since im a tuba player, the mouthpieces are huge, i should just throw one of my old ones on my hookah (it fits) and i might order some....idk, im kinda scared of it lol.

I have a few of these laying around

I also have one made of lexan that i use as a mouthpiece on the hose for. Think "female" mouthpiece. It feels much more natural.

I want to try Tombak but I'm afraid of not having a bowl for it. When I do get some I'll probably post a thread about how it's a rite of passage for any man. :I

i kind of doubt it, modern tobaccos have molasses/honey/glycerin where as tombak is tobacco that you soak in water and squeeze out the excess, the water is there more to prevent it from catching fire and let it smolder along with getting some of the extra nicotine out.
