Default As promised, pictures of my dad's hookah.

My dad's had this hookah for around 4 years now, it was a gift from my uncle after coming back from Egypt. It has just sat on top of our tv collecting dust. Until recently, I've never really looked at it, until tonight. I pulled it down, filled her with some cold water, packed the bowl with some mocha shisha. Now, I know that old shisha tends to be dry and taste like crap and this was no exception. Not to mention the lack of quality of this hookah, there were like three air leaks which I had to seek out by blowing into the hose.

Three of the six flavors of Shisha

Thanks for posting this. I wish I read Arabic so I could figure out what the packages say. In terms of old shisha it can often be "brought back to life" with a little glycerine. As to the leaks i'd suggest getting a hose gasket, a new hose and a base gasket and then try it again. While your at it you may want to get a new bowl as the one in the picture looks pretty rough.

Anyway, tell everyone here a bit about what draws you narghiles and your thoughts on smoke in general.

Great looking hookah! I do believe it is a Khalil Mamoon! The base is anyhow ... I like it a lot! The tobacco looks as though it could be some Nakhla ... which tends to be on the dry side as it is. Try buying some new shisha and trying it out ... let us know how it goes!

If you need some tips, I will be posting a "How To Setup A Hookah" in the November video contest ... so be sure to check that out ...

Cheers!

Well, a friend of mine had told me about smoking the hookah with friends and told me I should give it a try. Considering she's a way chill girl, I figured I'd at least look into it. After reading about the history of the hookah and its ceremony, I looked into buying one. The one pictured is actually my dad's. I grew anxious waiting for mine to arrive from HS so I tried his out. I really like the atmosphere the hookah creates, other than the crap taste in my mouth, I had no idea I was actually inhaling smoke. Anywho, I'll surely post pics of mine when I get it as well.

Unfortunately I am not to up on the sociological side of narghile use and basically ignorant of the ritualistic aspect of it. When I go to Arabic countries on business I spend as much time as possible in narghile lounges and markets but not having any ablity for language I miss most of what is happening. I have managed to try a lot of wonderful, traditional Tobamels, mu'essels, tumbāks and jurāks and have developed a taste for something other then then the candy and fruit flavours so popular here. I also have had a lot of great evenings leaning about how Arabs (and various religious/ethnic minorities in Arab countries) view things which has been good but that is about all.

Still, to me the joy is mostly about the sensations of the smoke itself and enjoying the beauty and craftsmanship that produce both the mu'essel and the narghile itself. In other words traditional narghiles delight my senses and make life better. If it's possible to get a deeper awareness of the whole thing I would certainly love to do so.
