Default Hookah tastes like coal..

Hey, I just bought a new hookah, and I just found out that the reason why my hookah tastes like coal is because I dont properly light the coal.

Am I supposed to wait 'till the entire coal is gray? So would I light it, then constantly blow it till it turns to that color?

Thanks for the help. I'm new to this hookah stuff...well not smoking it, just setting it up

What type of coals are you using?

If they are natural coals, make sure to leave them on the stove/burner until they are completely ashed over. After that happens you should be good to go.

Pretty much the same thing with the quicklights. Make sure all of the coal has sparked through, then blow on it to get rid of any black left over. Once it is completely red-hot then its ready to use.

Hope this helps, and happy smoking!

yea same goes for quicklights, what i like to do is set up my hookah with the tray on but no bowl then i light 2 or 3 quicklights depending on the bowl and just let them sit on the tray while u get you bowl ready. then by the time ur good to go the coals should be almost all grey and red hot just a few short blows and ur ready to smoke

Yeah usually happens with quicklights that arent fully lit.

Also the "Japanese" coals, the silver ones also tend to make it taste like coals unless you get the silver layer off.

wait until the coal is fully red and NEVER put the coals on an start puffing when the QL is still lighting up. Some of my friends do that, such a bad idea.

Also for QL's i recomend buying a Butane lighter, they work so much better and light so much quicker. Pick one up at walmart for 3 dollrs from RONSON

Just keep in mind if you're blowing on quicklights, don't breathe in with your face towards the quicklight. That's an awesome way to get a CO2 headache, and it can last for days.

Always have the coals red hot! I learned what happens when you don't and its not too fun.
