Both will smoke great after getting used to, but IMO the vortex is more failsafe.

for cleanliness i give it to the Phunnel.. its so easy to clean

for "smokeness" ide give them a tie

for coal usage... phunnels require more coals than the vortex

for tobacco usage.. phunnel uses more tobacco than the vortex.. also waste more lol

just get both mang

Yep, and with the three funnels I have used, one spire (hole in the middle) was raised too level with the rim of the bowl which had a negative impact on airflow. I have yet to see this defect on vortex bowls. Probably because they are mass manufactured in China by machine. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but consistent none the less.

You should get both.... but if you are gonna get a funnel... stick to a tangiers one... Chinese knock offs (aka havana funnels) are a piece of shit... stay away from them....

I personally have the three of em... unfortunately the first one I got was the chinese phunnel and I was really disapointed but then I got a tangiers one and it was a huge difference.

what size egyptian?

and if you put the foil on tight enough there shouldn't be a reason for it to sag...

You could use a bigger piece of foil and learn to twist while you wrap it on so it gets on tight. By using a bigger piece it gives you a better seal towards the bottom. Also use the juices on your finger and glaze it on the rim and it will give it extra seal.

I have a few phunnels & two vortexes.
For the past 5 months I used my phunnel daily... Just busted out my vortex again & realized it uses WAY less shisha... Little more restricted air flow & a little less 'cloudage' than the phunnel & takes more time to get going... But I use less coals & less shisha, which is all I need if I am smoking alone.

But if I am smoking with friends or smoking tangiers I gotta have my phunnel. Definitely the best option there.

If you smoke more nakhla get the vortex... If you are more of a tangiers smoker get phunnel.
If you smoke AF & Starbuzz use chinese mod w/ windcover

Just wondering, what kind of coal configuration do you use on your phunnel?

@jake
Small phunnel - 3 CCN or 3/4 Exoticas
Vortex - 2-3 exoticas w/ or w/o windcover depending on shisha.

In between the phunnel and a vortex, I'd go with the vortex because it uses the right amount of tobacco. I could not possibly want to smoke the same flavor for as long as even a small phunnel would warrant. Keeping this in mind 9 times out of 10 I'll use a standard Egyptian bowl. These are better for the types of tobacco I smoke(mainly Nakhla), and once again use a very reasonable amount of tobacco. The only real time I use a vortex is if I'm smoking Desi Murli.
As far as coal placement I use three coals and place them in a triangle on the bowl. I alternate between a windcover and taking off coals depending on the heat needed. I also used to smoke with 2 coals and a windcover for nearly the whole session but found that adding one more coal added 15-30 minutes of longevity to the session.

vortexes are handmade, thats why the holes in the bowl vary, some will be high, and some will be low.

I have a small phunnel, a medium phunnel (used ONCE, toooo BIG!) and a Vortex

I use my Vortex, the small phunnel collects dust, and the medium phunnel sits in a drawer and hasn't been touched in years.

Vortex and Egyptian are my favorite bowls that I use.

Deff go vortex man, easy to use, manage, clean and takes less heat. As far as your burnt shisha issues, get some hookah skill? just playing go find heavy duty foil that will stop any sag and you can pull it very hard without tearing.(shiny side down) Phunnels are nice dont get me wrong i have 2 but if you cant load it after you have had a few then its too difficult. Vortex is the way. Happy Smoking!

I agree with this. I think there's a lot more flexibility with the Phunnel, but it's also much easier to screw up. The Vortex, on the other hand, is much easier to get working smooth. But personally, I don't feel like there's much room to get creative with packing and hole patterns. Maybe there is and I'm just really bad at it. It's hard to say. But thus far, that has been by experience.
