Default Can someone help me troubleshoot my hookah?

I'm not really sure what the problem with it is. I'm doing everything while setting it up that allowed me to get nice big smoke clouds before, but now it produces nothing. My coals don't stay hot it seems, and while I figured it was just the brand of coals that I was using, I tried switching brands and I still have the same problem.

I've tried using a couple different methods for coals. One coal results in almost no smoke; two coals gets a little smoke, but still not too much, and it's so harsh and tastes so bad it's not even worth it.

The other thing that seems to be happening is, at first when I take a drag from it, it's completely plugged. If I drag on it hard enough a couple times, it becomes "unplugged", but then a lot of ash or dust comes through. I tried getting a new hose for it, which kind of helped for the plugging up problem, but I still get a ton of ash at first.

Does all of this point to any one problem?

I won't pretend to be an expert or anything. But have you tried cleaning the hookah really well? Like with brushes and such. I clean my stem after every use.

yeah I ran the brush through it and everything. didn't help.

as for the bowl, it's not a funnel bowl, just a standard Egyptian one.

Yeah, definitely clean it out real well, check for any blockage in your stem or hose even. If you let it sit after a session and let the coal sit on top, sometimes ash can drop down into your stem and cause build up. Also, check the ball bearing in your purge valve and make sure it isn't getting stuck. That happened to me with one of my Mya's, the purge valve ball bearing got stuck, and it sounds like the same problem you're having. I ran it under hot water for a good hour or so and was able to get it out.

for blockage there are a few reasons. a dirty hookah bowl or hose, not enough airholes, or if your useing a self seal system it could be jammed.

Sounds a lot like packing the bowl way too tight/not enough airholes.

Try cleaning out your bowl thoroughly. Then, dry it obviously. Once clean and dry, sprinkle the shisha into the bowl. Pack down just very lightly to get it under the rim. Put foil on it. Poke a lot of small holes into the foil. Then, turn the bowl over and while holding the foil down blow into the bottom. Make sure you're getting some air circulation through the shisha.

Also, before putting the bowl on the shisha, plug your hose into your ready to go Hookah and take a pull. If the air comes through easily, water bubbles, etc, stick the bowl on, add 2 coals on the rim of the bowl, let it warm up, and have at it.

If all of this fails...ship it to someone =)

I tried cleaning it out again and for some reason that seemed to do the trick. I'm not sure why because I know I've thoroughly cleaned it out with the brush before and it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

Thanks guys.

Oh yeah the other thing I wanted to ask, how much of a difference cab replacing the rubber stopper parts make? They don't seem worn out, but somebody told me to maintain those well.

If they are airtight and not worn out your fine. I get new rubber stuff maybe 3 times a year TOPS.

I think someones Hose is dirty well dirty is not the rite word but maybe RUSTED!! if things fly into your mouth when u take a hit thats not good. try investing in a larger guage hose and a fuly washable unit like the narbish from hookah john or a razan. If you dont like the big scepter style hose i know al fakher makes a small handle like the mya hoses.

but as far as your tight bowl go try fluff packing it or take off the foil and poke it fluff it up with a tooth pick and slap that foil back on should fixx it.

have you heard of a heat shield ? u can try making one with a piece of tine foil to help with heat management
