Default Recent problems with Tangiers...

So... Hamfoot and I smoke Tangiers quite a bit, but for some odd reason, it's always super harsh for the first 20-30 minutes and we have absolutely NO idea as to why that is... After that time period, it smokes like a dream until the bowl is all burnt up.

We pack our Tangiers bowls based on what John does and also how Eric from Tangiers demonstrated in a video we watched several months ago. They packed it down and never mentioned any issues with this technique...

Does anyone know why the hell this is happening? Please help!

Thanks.

How many coals do you begin with? It's kinda sounding to me like as the coals burn down a little the bowl begins smoking great. Maybe use a little less coal and a windcover, or let them bowl warm more instead of forcing heat onto it.

your coals are either too hot or its touching the foil. id recommend packing it looser and less. just mix it up in the container then throw it in with a fork and level it. dont compress it. make sure it has some space so the foil doesnt touch it. also use a tooth pick to punch 3 rings of 36-24-16. you can also try hd foil.

Are you using tangiers lucid or noir cause in my experience packing the noir line like john dose works great for me, but when it comes to the lucid line I always pack it in a tangiers phunnel bowl below the rim but still packed pretty tight. Sorry if this dosent help Ive been smoking tangiers for a couple of years now and I still have problems from time to time so maybe Im not the best one to give advice. But anyway thats my opinion.

We use the noir line, david.

We realized that it's probably too much heat, so we tried using 2 layers of regular foil and 2 coals instead of our normal 3 with a single layer of foil. Our tobacco never touches the foil.. ever, so we'll try the packing method you mentioned, gnu.

Thanks guys, we'll let you know if anything changes next time we pack a bowl.

What about the over pack method, cause isn't it touching the foil then? I thought that's pretty much how Eric and John were doing it in their videos?

also start with your coals hanging about 1/3 off then 10 minutes in flip them over and rotate them 1/4th the way. after that the coals should have cooled down and the bowl should be fully heated

No, no overpack on tangiers. Watch the video again. They do a test where they push the foil down on the bowl and if there's no room/space, it's packed too much.

I suggest 2 nats. However, if it's not heating up, rather than using another coal, windcover it a little.

This is pretty much exactly what we use for every single bowl we pack, inlcuding our small phunnels. Tangiers is the only tobacco that acts like this for us and we've tried a few things to remedy the situation, but it looks like we have more to try out.

Thanks again for the replies!

Yea with Tangiers it's way too much lol we found that out the hard way..

It's legit with everything else though we just forgot for a while that Tangiers doesn't need as much heat to burn.

Well, not necessarily. We knew about the heat issue a while ago, but using 2 coals instead of 3 only reduced the harshness a little bit, though it was still there.

We'll smoke a bowl of kashmir peach later today and pack it loosely like you suggested and see what happens.

Well, our Kashmir Peach bowl is running low and I thought I'd post our experience:

We packed it just like you suggested, gnu, and we used 2 pieces of the new Exoticas with a portion hanging off the bowl like you mentioned. The more smoke that was produced, the harder it was to take regular pulls... It was only when the coals were smaller and we put the windcover on that we were able to take legit pulls. The second set of coals smoked like a dream, though.

I think we're gonna try cutting one exotica piece in half next time and see if we can find the right balance. This is a bit annoying.

2 exotica pieces definitely don't burn as hot as 2 CHs or 2 Coconaras, which is making the heat balance a bit harder to figure out since exoticas aren't what I normally use to smoke tangiers.

I'm just gonna keep smoking tangiers until I get it right... I'm getting closer.

One of the keys to Tangiers is to make sure the bowl is heated before the first pull. I always put the windcover on and let it sit for a good 5 min before even thinking of touching it. I will order some more Tangiers and do a video on my packing, foil holes and start up technique. There are several different ways to get it going and I am not saying mine is the best but it works for me.

Smoked a bowl of ILTOBC last night. It was perfect a full 2 odd hours.

My setup was a small phunnel, KM Americana, narbish, cold water in the base. 2 CH nats on the bowl to start, about 3/4 on the bowl across from each other. 20 odd minutes, ashed, flipped and rotated the CH nats. 20 minutes later, add wind cover. Once those died, time for a new set of coals.

You really don't need more than 2 coals at a time, at least using coconaras or ch nats. I didn't even have to purge once during the session.

Tangiers.
