Default Coals

Hello,

I see some of you add 2 or 3 coals to the head of the hookah. Is there a rule to go by. My new hookah should come with a normal size so bowl. So should two be ok? or should I get three ready and kick off the one if I do not need it. Thanks.

2 is usually good but play it by ear according to the tobacco.

Its all about experimentation. I usually start with 2 and thats all I need. If after 5 or 6 minutes the taste and smoke is weak I will add a coal and hang it off the edge of the bowl so its not too much heat. Heat management is the key to a great smoke.

It all depends on how big your stock bowl is. Usually stock bowls are small clay egyptian versions. For a bowl that small you only need one coal. If by chance that doen't give you enough, then you coud always add another half and observe. If you buy a large bowl or a Tangier's phunnel bowl, then that's when you have to start off with two or more depending on size.

Experimenting is truly the only way for you to find out how many coals you need for your specific bowl and shisha. I advise to start off with one and then take it from there.

It looks like I will have to experiment some to figure it all out. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, experimenting would be best. It all depends on how hot your coals are, the shisha you are using, and the foil.

It also depends on what type of coals you're using. If you're using a 33mm QL 11/2 - 2 should work just fine. If you are using a finger coal like Exotica, Stargate, Nours, Al Adjad (sp?), etc. You can get away with 1- 11/4-11/2" piece if you use a windcover. It all depends on the type of coal and the type of shisha. Some brands are heat sensitive and you have to experiment to find the perfect amount.

That's what i meant. I just worded it in a faulty way. Hookah is like science, you need to experiment to understand things.

For me it dpends on the shisha. With SB i use 2 with a windcover.
For Nakhla I start out with 3, to get the shsiha going, then take off one and smoek with 2.
AF i use 3 usually, and don't use a windcover.
HH i use one.

These ar al in terms of 1/4 Exoticas by the way.

For a normal size bowl, two is more than enough. Standard bowls are quite small. I tend to use a little bit of a deeper bowl and larger in diameter. So I use 3 coal pieces. Or if using quicklights I use 2 for a larger bowl, 1 for a standard bowl.
