Default Advice

If you were to give a word advice to a newcomer to the hookah world, what would it be?

Another way of asking this is like the song, "I wish that I knew what I know now..."

What would it be?

Could be about anything....smoking, hookah, shisha, coals...its up to you guys, THE HOOKAH PROS!

Don't pack the shisha too tight.
Fluff it and sprinkle it on the bowl.
Also, don't overpack.

A lot of newbies (myself included, a while ago) do this.

Also, let the coals sit on the bowl for a bit before you start smoking.
I used to light a quicklight and put it on the bowl and inhale right away, got major headaches afterwards >.<

Never, ever, ever lift your hookah by the stem.
Killed a sweet base that way.

Great advice so far....I was wondering why my QL's were giving me a headache. And I never would have thought twice about picking my hookah up by the stem...

Keep em coming!

Spark up your quick-lights outside so your house doesn't smell like a chem lab

...oh, and the amount of time you save by using a (cheap?) bowl screen isn't worth the scorching you'll ultimately have to endure...

Don't use quick lights. Don't refer to the tobacco as shisha, shisha refers to the actual hookah itself.

Experiment. "What is the best moassel," is really an unanswerable question . . . the closest correct answer is "what do you like?" Try different flavors/brands. You will find what you like. Check out reviews for other's opinions but remember that they are just that . . . opinions. In the end what is best is what you find you like. Smoke happy.

As far as naturals vs. QL's.. uses nats whenever possible, but if you can't because of location.. always make sure that the coal is completely ashed over and does not have any of the "black powder" when lighting. Experiment with all the brands you can afford, and multiple flavors. I would also say you should experiment with different bowls, ie egyptian, mod, vortex, funnel.. and of course the good old apple bowl.
Another thing that took me awhile to figure out.. always try to make the foil "tight like a drum" when you put it on the bowl.. it seems to make a pretty big difference imo.

Don't let your hose fall off you lap throwing coals on your carpet, effectively destroying any hopes you had of getting your security deposit back... lol.

Try many tobacco brands with an open mind. Don't just get on flavor from each, try a few from each brand. Also, keep checking the reviews section on here and don't be afraid to pick the brains of any of us members. Most people here have tons of great advice for beginners and even some of the experts learn a thing or two.

Check out the review section on the site. It's incredibly helpful when you want to try new brands. i usually try the top 2 or 3 flavors i see in the reviews when I want to try a new brand. So far all has been great.

The quicklights are giving you a headache because even though they light right away, they aren't fully lit until they ash over. Blow on them gently until they are 100% white on the outside and glowing red everywhere( no black).
This goes the same for naturals, however there is no advantage to blowing on the naturals until your ready to ash them.

Other advice:
good large hookah= km. Good small hookah = Mya qt
you don't have to get either, but those are the most common success stories

nammor hose: washable, durrable, smokes well
bowl: get a vortex, an Egyptian/ mod, and a small tangiers phunnel. Yes all 3, then experiment with all of them.
Wash your hookah often!

Smoke a variety of brands, there is always something to discover

search the heck out of these forums, most question can be answered and if they can't ask it here

participate in chat,it gets lively at times

try as many variations of everything as possible. don't decide that something is the best and stop trying new things. you WILL miss out on something.

Ditch:

Quicklights

Generic Chinese crap rigs

Tobacco that don't treat you right.

Embrace:

Reputable vendors

Reputable brands (Pipes)

A vast variety of tobaccos. Learn what you like and don't like. Understand that more expensive does not necessarily translate to better flavor.

Experimentation! A lot of people prefer to ice the water in the base. I find that warm water provides greater flavor and still smokes cool.

READ and POST in the forums. Get to know the more active members and what they like, benefit from their experiences pertaining to your preferences. E.G.- I enjoy traditional tobaccos, so I make it a point to absorb everything Hajo posts, it has saved me a great learning curve.

if you do happen to get a hookah headache, take some headache meds & a hot shower, but only if it's a really bad one, minor hookah headaches usually go away pretty quickly, it's also a good idea to put ice in your base if you want your smoke cooler
