I think he's asking why a $150 KM is so much better than a $30 generic...

Generally it's the open draw/wide gauge of the pipe, material used and design, which makes for an overall experience and smokeability. I've had quiet a few generic egyptians that weren't any different from a km as far as smoke quality, the difference was in lighter stainless steel construction and a simplistic design. And there's no doubt of the fanboyism hyping km's into stratosphere.

higher quality material, better air seal, perhaps even the downstem height could make a difference.

It's pretty much all a matter of personal preference as far as I'm concerned. What works for you is always whats best . . . Smoke happy.

KM's have become the '350 Chevy' of the hookah world.

ok so the reason a hookah, be it what ever, seems to be better can come down to a few things IMHO.

-low constrictions/high flow (wide down stem, good hose ports)
-large space in the base above the water level (seems to give thicker smoke and smoother pulls)

that is all it comes down to pretty much how well a rig smokes, pure and simple.

many people think one rig over another is better due to the craftsmanship or the hand made over the machine or visa versa. personally i think the craftsmanship of KMs is not as good as it should be (better than some generics ive seen for sure but not great) and the machine made myas have a bit of flow issues some times and the stems are super rough inside so they suck to clean).

kms are decent rigs but i think you can probably get just as good of a rig with a generic rig and save a lot of money

You question was not very specific, I mean are you trying to compare KM to a Mya for example or to cheap chinese or to a Syrian style? Personally a KM or MZ or any other Egyptian made hookah are pretty much the same. There are some beautiful designs, some are solid others are stainless steel but the quality is similar. Syrians to me are the most beautilful and high quality so the one I have just sits in my living room as a piece of art. Mya's are chinese made and they are high quality but they are more expensive than many of the KMs. To me I like both but its traditional vs modern. As far as why KMs are $150 its all about marketing and what people are willing to pay for it. I personally would not pay more than $50-60 for a hookah regardless of what its called.
