Most thick, ceramic things are good. Like i use a solid soup mug, and its never showed any signs of wear with the heat

If you're going a really short distance, a plate or cup will be fine (as long as it's ceramic or glass and won't be burned through). I don't know if it really makes too much of a difference, but I always worry about the carrier cooling off my coals. So, to keep that from happening, I take a coffee cup and put about a centimeter of water in the bottom, then I put one of those wire kitchen sink drainers over the top lip of the cup so that the coals will be suspended. The wires heat up really quick so I don't worry about cooling, there's air flow, and when I need to knock some ash off my coals, I can put it into the wire drainer and shake it a little and when the ashes fall, they drop into the water -- just in case a chunk of the hot coal breaks off. Plus, if you set your coals to the side while changing bowls, you don't have to worry about the heat going through whatever's holding them and burning the counter or table top.

Just get one of those dollar wire kitchen sink drainers at wal-mart and put it over a coffee cup.

Buy a natural incense burner. They are made for coals, and can be had very cheap. You can also burn stuff like frankincense, myrrh, copal, and sage on them with your tired out coals.
deja vu

i just use my coal tray. I'll set everything up outside (where I smoke 99% of the time), come in and toss my coals on my spare tray (for whatever reason, i got 2 with my KM) and just be careful enough to grab the tray opposite of where I have the coals.

I thought long and hard about what to make a coal carrier out of until I found that I could bet a stainless coal carrier for less than twelve bucks.

This, Ive had 5 cocos in my cast iron ***, and it could put my hand on the bottom of it, and not feel any heat.

DO NOT USE TIN CANS FROM SS OR SB they are stainless steal and are excellent conductors of heat and will burn the fuck out of you.

I bought a 50 cent non stick cooking pan for my coal carrier. I got it at a thrift store, works great and its cheap. There are tons of options like that at the thrift store.
