Default What do you use? - coals

To keep things going in a hookah related discussion, I figured I'd start a topic series of "What Do Use?". This allows for compairsion between people's set-ups and new ideas to form.

First up....

What do you use for coals?

Do you use Quicklites? Japanese Silver tabs? Natural wood?

What brand, what size, if natural - material used (lemon wood, olive wood, cocoshell, ect) and formation type (finger, bulk lump/chunks).

And last but not least, how to you light them and how many in a session do you use? (not placement but grand total)

I prefer in this order:

Japanese Silver Tabs (Sultan or Golden)
Smiley's Coco coals
Golden Quicklights
I'll use 3 Kings if I run out because they are the most readily availble coals in town.

Smiley's Cocoshell coals are compressed ground coconut (I believe) and seem to be pressed into a shape, then broken. I consider them Bulk Lump style.

When I get Golden's I try for the 40mm, as they last the longest and are easier to break in half or quarters.

For 3 Kings, they only sell the 33mm size in town.

I typically light all my coals on my Gas Stove. I have to with the Smiley coals. I also own a decitated 3-flame torch lighter (cheap $5 lighter) that I use with high end butane fuel (Coilbri brand).

One trick I'll use if I use a lighter to start my Japanese coals is to light a small cheap jared candle (Dollar store) - you can hold the coal over the flame (with tongs) with little chance of burning yourself. I've also made a brace from foil to hold the. coal over the flame to light.

Just a side note: I own a brass bucket that I bought from the salvation army ($2) that i use to transport the coals. It's soild, 1 piece deep bucket - it's great for knocking ashes (instead of against the tray on the hookah) and with a piece of cork underneath it - fireproof.

For Japanese coals, I tend to start with 2, then light 2 more after the first set dies. Total is normally 4 for a 1.5-2 hour session.

Quicklights I start with 1, broken in half or quarters. I'll add more (either in haves or quarter pieces) till the bowl is smoked. Total is 2-2.5 pieces per bowl (anywhere from 55min to 2+ hours).

Smiley coals, depends on pieces. X-large, 1 chunk. Large - 2, Medium - 3. They take the longest to light, so I often only use them once a session. If they burn out (45-75min) before the bowl is done, I'll light some Silver Tabs to replace.

I usually use 33mm Golden Roll quicklites.
I'll break them all in half and keep em in a gladlock container;
I start with three halves and for a 45min-1hr session use about 4-6 pieces (2-3 coals)
depending on the bowl depth.
I also have used silver tabs, but they are chinese and burn rather strangely, so until I
obtain some proper ones, I avoid using them. The goldens are readily available at some stores
on Duval St., so I always end up buying them instead of ordering offline.
This is not economically minded lol.

I usually use Golden quick lights, i don't taste the charcoal. But sometimes if my friends bring some cheap quicklights, it ruins the whole bowl. You can totally taste the charcoal ugh.

I usually just light the quicklights with a bic lighter. takes like 20-30 seconds

Ohhh and for coals ...

I am really liking the Smiley coconut charcoals, was my primary pick while on vacation.
I like the Japanese coals, can't go wrong there, they burn clean, and ash nicely.
Followed next by the finger coals, I got some cheap Baroody coals, but am gonna try some Diamante coals next.
.. and then for convenience I like the quicklights, for when you can't get to a stovetop. I use the Goldens.

I am going to update my coal preferences...

Well, I use the Japanese Coals, I am currently using the brand "Easy-Lite Hookah Coal", but I did find a certain brand of Japanese Coals made by Hookahology, that came HIGHLY recommended by KorNKitten. I got two boxes but haven't tried them yet. I can't wait to try them! (I will post a review)

I also just ordered some Diamente Finger Coals, I got 4 Bags, they came highly recommended by Sammn, and many other people.

I also keep some Golden Quick Lights on hand, and still have a couple rolls that I carry around with me when I bring my hookah to a friends house. They are easy to light, if I need to use them instead of my finger or japanese coals.

I am thinking of trying 3 Kings, in comparison to the Golden Quick Lights!?

I also have some Smiley's Coconut Coals, and they aren't to bad. I have had pretty good results with them, with good monitoring. I would like to find some more Coconut coals online, in other brands?

Over all, at home I like to use the finger coals, and japanese coals. My top two brands are the Diamente Fingers (I am presuming they will be my favorites) and the Hookahology (Again, I am guessing on them being my new favorites)
For quick lights, I like either Goldens so far. But I only have those as backups. and am still considering the 3 Kings to try in comparison.

As to the quaility of Goldens next to 3 Kings, I prefer the Goldens hands down. Ash better, break cleaner (in half, not pieces) and don't disinagrate as often. Most 3 Kings I've ever gotten, seem to beak too easily and disinagrate into charcoal dust.

I too have altered my coal preferences. I still love the Sultan ST's, but gave up on the Smiley coals. They burn HOT - too hot unless you watch them like a hawk. Plus, I never got a re-use them, I tended to forget to remove them from the water.

I keep Goldens around for "quicky smokes" or for traveling, but as of right now - my coal of choice is the Diynamite Natural Fingers. Loving those!

BUT... I do want to try Golden's version of a silver-coated tab and both Nours and Stargate natural coals.

I use mainly The Chinese version of Japanese Easy Lites. I do however use Pharoah's Elite Golden Quicklights from time to time. I use 2 quick lights on my Egyptian clay bowl (1 flat and one leaning on the one laying flat) works great and gives about 45-55 minutes of reliable heat. When I use my Small Super Chief I use 4 Easy Lites. They work great. I use a long grill lighter to light the quicklights (always outside), and the electric stove for the easy lites

I like using nat coals.... but I can only use them outside as they have a higher risk of popping and throwing pieces of red hot stuff on the carpet...

33mm 3 Kings is my house staple.

Rarely I use a bit finger coal... but thats only once every 3-4 months.

I use:
-Golden 33mm coals
-Three Kings 40mm and 33mm coals
-Kwikstart Easy Lites (just found em, come in a blue/silver box)

Tried a few natural kinds ,all were pretty good but I must admit, I love my sparkly quicklites lol.
Maybe it's my severe A.D.D and inexplicable attraction to shiny objects hehe.

The only two authentic Japanese easy-lights I know of are Abu Hitam and Golden Canary. They are actually cokes and not charcoals.

i started off using 33mm 3 kings, then moved to 33mm golden coals from hookah-shisha.com, and now i use coco naras exclusively. i use anywhere from 4-6 of them per bowl depending on what brand of tobacco i am smoking and what the temp of my room is, i commonly keep my smoking room around 60 degrees this time of year because i keep a couple windows slightly open and i find the colder and more drafty the room is the more coal i need since i dont use a windcover.
