Hey,

I think someone did that as an experiment somewhere on this forum, (or was it the other one?), and it pretty much exploded. I am talking about the QL variety.

I can't see how it would work considering the nature of microwave ovens and how charcoal is made. I guess it would depend on the natural frequency of charcoal.

Microwaves work by sending radio waves at the natural frequency of water. Doing that excites the water particles and causes them to move rapidly, essentially boiling them. That causes heat which cooks whatever contains it. That is why things turn soggy in the microwave. Those crisper sleeves are a substance that have the same or very similar natural frequency but do not have the same heat limitations as water so it can get much hotter and therefore crisp breads.

Charcoal is basically made by burning off everything but the carbon in wood. Part of that is that it completely vaporizes the moisture content of the wood. So unless Charcoal happens to be a similar natural frequency as water (which I doubt) I can't imagine there being a whole lot of effect at all unless it manages to heat the air that is inside it.

Although if the coals are more like briquettes then I suppose it would have moisture in it from the cornstarch that holds them together. But I can't imagine that catching on fire just building up pressure and possibly exploding as was mentioned.

I've seen it done with a coconara, it didn't really explode just more of a big flame, i still wouldn't try it though.

Don't do it you'll wreck your microwave. Besides, natural coals can be easily started on a cheap electric burner so why bother?

i would imagine your microwave would end up catching fire, or at least being a little black on the inside, and i definitely don't think it's worth the risk of burning your house down.. if you wanna light something quick and fun that's a little safer, use a torch

Not to mention the chemicals in a confined space would make the microwave a bad choice for food afterwards!

yeah you can pick up a second hand one pretty cheap or a budget on, it will def work, i tried it out once for like 30 seconds, but not sure what sort of damage it would do to the microwave and as its a pretty expensive one id rather not find out lol

it would be good to see if someone uses a cheap microwave to heat coal with regularly and see how long it last, or if there are any problems. my only problem is that they take up quite alot of space, especailly getting another one!!!
