it doesnt matter for cooking according to renolyds so it shouldnt matter for smoking. that being said i put it shiny side down out of OCDness and consistency. dont think it matters in all honesty, same as pattern of holes, it really is more so how many holes (it was either eric from tangiers or john from CH that holed one half of the bowl and left the other half covered and it smoked fine and the only difference was that the side with holes had ash on it, other than that it was evenly burned).

the heat is being transfered from contact for the most part and the fact that heat is not a wave like light or sound makes it being shiny or matte null and void if it matters.

I always put it shiny side down but I heard that stuff won't stick to the shiny side as easily as the matte side. Thats why I always thought people use shiny side down.

i fold it in half so the shiny sides are facing each other in the middle while at the same time double foiling it.

Hi All,

I don't know if it really matters in the context of hookah smoking but heat is transferred in three different ways. The first one is conduction, i.e, through contact of the of the coals with the foil. The second one is convection, where the heat is transferred through a fluid medium, in the hookah case, this is the air between the foil and the tobacco. The final one is radiation, where heat is transferred as energy by electromagnetic waves. If you look into thermos bottles, you will most often see a mirror surface. In theory, the shiny side of the foil is just like the mirror in the thermos bottle and should reflect the heat energy back into the bowl.

So, even though I haven't tested it in any scientific way, I always put the shiny side of the foil down.

except there are also plastic thermoses inside. mirror is easier to clean hence the reason, the only reason a thermos works is the vacuum between the 2 containers. the 3 forms heat is transfered are not light waves, only light waves reflect off shiny materials more than matte materials. conductive doesnt matter which side, convection doesnt matter which side (seeing as it is essentially conductive just going through another medium), and electro magnetic again doesnt reflect based on the polish of the metal.

from what ive seen and heard on different cooking/how its made types of shows, the shiney and matte is just an outcome of the production methods. something to do with the way the foil is rolled to make it thinned two sheets go into a roller back to back. the sides that come in contact with the roller are matte the side that touches the other sheet of foil is shiney. Also there is no real difference in out comes for our./baking/cooking needs. Unless of course you are making a solar cooker, where the shiney side would need to go out but that is due to cooking with light reflection, not fire.

yep, they roll them through 2 sheets at a time so they dont rip when they get rolled down

well, am i the only one who believe the opposite?
From what i've been tought from a great egyptian guy, shinny side goes up...
that is because you only want to heat shisha up by the hot air passing from the coals then holes and throught the shisha. If yhe shinny side is down then you have more heat that is not really necesary and makes the smoke harsh

Cheers

but a glass screen works just fine without any direct airflow shisha? >.>

I really think the heat produced when the coals are hotter during the draw is not really what makes the shisha smoke....and its really just the heating from the oven-like features of the bowl that give it its good smoke.

But i've heard that the smoke is harsher with the glass screen because it requires a bit more coal to get going. And there really is direct air-flow. Just put your hand over the bowl and tell me if the temp of the air there isnt hot.

it takes more heat to get going because the glass is so thick compared to the foil. glass (depending on the type) has very similar heat transfer but the fact that the glass is 3/32" ( guess) compared to the .007 of foil (i couldnt find a good source for the thickness of foil but i found that and it seemed to ring a bell with me). but so you are talking .09375 vs .007 of an inch thick of a similar heat resistance (or what ever the technical term is) so ya it will take more heat and time to warm up

I still find that shinny side up can be much easier to manage than shisny side down and you can have a more carefree session by putting a bit more coal and not having to move it around.

are there any reviews on this subject like two hookahs with the same bowl and same amount of coal but one with shiny side up and the other shiny side down?

what some one needs to do is do that but do it many times with the same exact tobacco and exact same set up, same holes, same coal brands etc and put a temp sensor in there and record it. yes a little excessive but it would kill this debate once and for all.

i would bet there would be very very very little to no difference
